DC33 Mini Badge

DC33 Mini Badge

Regular price $20.00 Sale

Note: This is an exclusive product for DEF CON 33.  It is not available online.

For the past decade, HackerBox has distributed various "learn to solder" kits at DEF CON in the form of a Mini Badge (aka Badge Buddy).  The Mini Badges feature a themed PCB and some blinkie LEDs.  They are cool, but not excessively challenging for an introduction to soldering.

Assembly only requires a few steps...

  • The 6-pin slide-switch can be oriented in either direction
  • The coin cell clip is positioned to match the outline on the PCB
  • Each of the three LEDs must be oriented with the long pin in the "+" hole
  • While each LED will work in any location, the suggested color styling is:
    • RED on the antenna tower
    • BLUE on the ground dish
    • RGB (CLEAR) on the satellite in the sky

Want a demo video?  Soldering the DC33 Mini Badge goes exactly as demonstrated in the DC31 Mini Badge Video.  Also, our DC28 Learn To Solder Class shows assembly of an earlier Mini Badge (fast-forward to 29:00 to jump right into the soldering).

Still at DEF CON?  Visit the Hardware Hacking Village / Soldering Skill Village in HALL 2 to use a soldering station and even get some pointers from an expert volunteer.

Already recovering at home?  To get your own soldering tools and practice four projects, check out the HackerBox Soldering Workshop.

Embedded NFC TAG - The DC33 Mini Badge features a 13.56MHz NTAG215 RFID.  Most mobile phones support NFC functionally to read and write 13.56 MHz RFID tags with a simple app.  For example, a lot of folks use the NFC Tools app from wak dev.  It is available for both iOS and Android.  It can store some contact information (as little or as much as you wish to share) into the NFC tag.  Then you can quickly tap to share that information with anyone you'd like to stay in touch with.  This video demonstrates how to easily write whatever information you wish into the NFC tag. If you're interested to take things a step further and create your own vCard, check out this video.
